Former NFL Quarterback Ryan Mallett Dies in Drowning Accident

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett died in an apparent drowning accident on Tuesday, June 27, 2023. He was 35 years old.

Mallett was reportedly swimming in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Destin, Florida, when he went under and did not resurface. Lifeguards were able to pull him from the water, but he was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Mallett was a native of Arkansas and played college football at the University of Arkansas. He was a two-year starter for the Razorbacks and led them to a 11-2 record and a berth in the Sugar Bowl in 2010.

Ryan Mallett was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He also played for the Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, and San Francisco 49ers during his five-year NFL career.

After his playing days ended, Mallett transitioned into coaching. He was an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas and at the University of Memphis before becoming the head coach at White Hall High School in Arkansas in 2022.

Ryan Mallett’s death is a tragic loss to the NFL, the University of Arkansas, and the White Hall community. He was a talented quarterback who had a successful playing career and was making a positive impact as a coach.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mallett’s family and friends during this difficult time.

In addition to his death being a tragedy, it is also a reminder of the dangers of rip currents. Rip currents are powerful currents that can pull swimmers out to sea. If you are caught in a rip current, do not try to swim against it. Instead, swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Then, swim back to shore.
